GENERAL RULES AND GUIDELINES
Follow the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”
Integration
Applicants must fill and complete the required forms and agreements. Each person applying for Membership must be sponsored, requiring a personal interview with the General Director. A two-day work exchange (6 hours total) is required before an Applicant is accepted. After the two-day trial period, if the Applicant and the Director are finding the arrangement of mutual benefit, an Applicant may choose a campsite & begin the next phase of integration; a one month commitment & trial period with a 2-week review.
Service
All members are required to participate in a 25-hour workweek--to be arranged with management. Any changes to this schedule require a 24-hour notice & approval to the General/Assistant Director. All members agree to complete their assigned work & follow the instructions of their facilitators to the best of their ability... to make every effort to clearly understand the job they are being asked to do in the time frame it is calculated to be completed in... using common sense.

Psychological issues or the use of any mind-altering substance including caffeine, alcohol, plant medicines must not interfere with the quality of work or ability to communicate with others.
Safety
Members agree to wear appropriate headgear & protective clothing while working --including earplugs, hard hats, gloves & shoes, especially when using power tools, blades, etc...
To use safety equipment & prescription glasses or contact lenses if required...
To drink adequate amounts water to keep hydrated...
To clean and bandage all wounds, scrapes, cuts with appropriate First-Aid provided.
Security
Members who drive and maintain vehicles all agree to be aware of who is the last driver on the land when leaving, day and night, and to close and lock the gate behind themselves.
Privileges
Members may enjoy privileges including use of the common kitchen, steel building, yoga greenhouse, shower, toilet, and grounds...
An organic salad & grain lunch during the workweek...
A personal locker and cupboard space may be available, upon request...
Vegetables from the garden (only when specifically authorized).
Members may enjoy opportunities to receive money (Equaling ~$10/hour w/ an initial cap of $250/month per person... Additional opportunities may be available, upon discretion of the Management.)
Group Living
All Guests must agree to the same Rules and Guidelines as Members.
All members MUST attend weekly meetings on Monday mornings at 11 am. –12am (before lunch).
Permission for all events, workshops and parties occurring at The Hawaiian Sanctuary must be cleared with the Management.
If at any time a member exhibits hostile, violent or abusive behavior towards their self or another member or is destructive of community tools or property, this is grounds for immediate expulsion from land... in this case, the person may be given 24 hours notice for removal of personal belongings.
If any member repeatedly breaks rules, they will be asked to leave. Quiet hours are during the workweek between 10 pm to 8 am --From 12 am to 10 am on weekends... no loud talking, radio or recorded music, coconut chopping, etc... only quiet cell phone usage, and light conversation (unless during a specific event or celebration with 2 weeks notice).
Members agree to be considerate of others personal space, peace, body and process ... when in conversation, playing personal stereos, using cell phones, playing movies, etc... (Members agree to refrain from using cell phones and personal stereos during working hours or at dining table).
Members agree to smoke tobacco only in parking lot & not within smell of any commons building, activity space or the garden or orchards... and to discard butts or cigarette ends into garbage cans outside of buildings where smell is not an issue. Members agree to respect others' personal space, body and process... and to harmoniously work with other members of community.
Members agree to mediation if a conflict between members cannot be peaceably worked out.
Members agree to turn off lights, if they're the last/only one in the room.
Kitchen Maintenance
Members agree to clean up after themselves, washing dishes, cleaning counter tops, putting food away, keeping refrigerator & shelves clean & organized...
To recycle bottles, aluminum cans & plastic in bins provided in kitchen & re-cycle area...
To keep all personal belongings out of kitchen area and all commons areas, except for personal food items, which may be kept in personal bins in kitchen area...
To use lockers or tents to keep personal items.
Kitchen Mantra: “If you break it, repair it, if you borrow it, replace it, if you dirty it, clean it.“
Health and Hygiene
All members agree to be responsible for their own Health Insurance.
Members agree to keep their body in good health and appearance by washing hands and body daily, using soap (body odor must not bother others)...
To wear clothes of reasonably clean and presentable appearance...
Guest Policy
All members and visitors MUST sign our liability release forms.
All guests must agree to follow the Rules and Guidelines, as they pertain to them.
All guests must be escorted during their visit, unless in a Member's personal area.
All visitors to respect and observe the work focus of our members, Monday through Friday, during working hours--making any interruptions brief, until workday is complete.
Visitors must phone call before arriving on property.
At all times, members are responsible for their visitor’s behavior including cleaning up after them.
New members in first two weeks trial period must request approval of the General Director or Assistant Director for visitors.
Overnight guests may stay for only 1 night during workweek, 2-nights on weekend.
Guests using the kitchen, must participate by helping with an assigned task.
During retreats, workshops, etc., we request all members to refrain from having visitors in order to maintain focus of the retreat.
All visitors must park in designated parking areas.
Land Stewardship
Members agree to honor the land, trees and vegetation and to ask permission of the General/Assistant Director before cutting or planting any new plants, trees or building any trails, etc.
